I spent the weekend at MD Anderson in Houston. My dad has cancer and my mom and I spent some sleepless hours in the waiting room while the surgeon removed his tumorous prostate and several equally tumorous lymph nodes.

As she and I were on our last legs, this cheerful group of volunteers passed through with a cart of graham crackers and hot tea.

That dark moment turned with just a kind gesture of cookies and tea.

Progressive donors are giving to you now because they are exasperated. They are deeply worried. They are depressed. They are in a dark moment.

What’s your gesture of cookies and tea? How can you turn their dark moment into one of shared humanity?
