Longing for knowing something is human
Instead of a PowerPoint deck, I recently made a set of hand-drawn charts for a presentation, even though my handwriting is far from perfect.
In addition to exchanging texts, two of my closest friends and I have become postcard pen pals. Here’s one I hand-colored.
There are way smarter people than me talking about AI and its implications. But what I know is this: despite the benefits of the technology and regardless of the consequences, I’m craving things that feel uniquely human.
I want to see someone’s handwriting.
I want to listen to records.
I want to hear my friends’ and family’s voices.
I want to catch a typo!
I want to get letters and postcards and other stuff I like in the mail.
I want to ask an expert rather than look it up.
With all this AI buzz, doom, buzz-doom, I’m craving the unmistakable evidence of another human being.
The crooked letter. The smudge. The typo. The handwriting. The voice. The thing that took longer than it needed to.
