In our culture, the mind is the dashing leading man and the body is relegated to playing a minor character role — one filled with conflicted emotions.

We have habitual ideas about our bodies that have been generated by a lifetime of experiences. Because you have your history of experience with your body, you may be typecasting it and obscuring other ways to engage with it.

Here are three common associations I believe our culture prioritizes when it comes to body.

THE ATHLETE

When you think of your body, you likely flash to fitness and the feelings — positive and negative — the idea of fitness brings. For some, this is pleasant. For many, this is a chore.

THE MEDICAL DOCTOR

When you think of your body, you likely flash to health and the feelings — positive and negative — the idea of health brings. For some, this is uplifting. For many, this is scary.

THE MODEL

When you think of your body, you likely flash to aesthetics and the feelings — positive and negative — the idea of body aesthetics brings. For some, this is healthy. For many, this is shameful.

BREAKING THE STEREOTYPES

Regardless of which type(s) you favor and where you fall on the spectrum of positive and negative feelings, if you are only thinking in these realms, you have typecast your body.

Your body has information to give you and can help you lead a more purposeful, intentional and happy life — if you listen to it deeply.

THE EMBODIED LEADER

Paying renewed attention and reimagining your associations with body is a practice that can radically transform how you show up as a leader in your organization.

Connecting somatic practices like martial arts, breathing and meditation to your purpose and commitment as a change agent can anchor your intentions, increase your confidence and come to your aid during stressful moments.

When you rethink your habitual aversions and attractions to body, you can unleash a whole new world of strength.

Sound amazing? It is.
